About
244960Lt. Kenneth George "Robby" Robinson
United States Navy USS Boise
from:Middlefield, Ohio
Kenneth G. Robinson graduated from The Ohio State University in June 1942 with an Optometry degree. He, like many others, had signed up for service in December 1941 following the Pearl Harbor attack, entering the US Naval reserve as a 90-day wonder officer from Columbia University. He left Columbia as an ensign and proceeded to Great Lakes for training. Dr. Robinson was assigned to the USS Boise (CL-47) as an anti-aircraft battery officer. He boarded the ship at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1943 and sailed to the Mediterranean for the Sicily invasion campaign. The Boise provided fire support for the Gela beach landings and Patton's advance to Messina. His ship sailed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in late 1943 for refitting. Dr. Robinson was promoted to Lt. (j.g.) at this time and he was placed on a three-week leave.
Dr. Robinson reported to Brooklyn to rejoin the Boise, which then proceeded to Australia via the Panama Canal. The ship again provided fire support for MacArthur's island hopping campaign in the southwest Pacific. In October 1944 he was gunnery officer for a 5-inch battery and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, particularly the Surigao Strait action which was the last surface engagement between ships in naval history.
The Boise remained in the Philippines into 1945 supporting the capture of Luzon. The ship departed for the U.S. in June 1945 and included a stop in Pearl Harbor on the way. Dr. Robinson departed the Boise in July 1945 at San Pedro CA and proceeded to establish an optometry practice in Medina Ohio for the remainder of his life. He passed away in 1985 at the age of 69.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
