251820 Dvr. George Owen British Army Royal Army Service Corps from:Neasden, Middlesex (d.23rd April 1945) George Owen served as a driver with the RASC in 174th Infantry Brigade. Add to this record.  Additional Information: A London newspaper article from 1944 read: ‘Neasden Soldiers “Miracles”. A Neasden soldier, Dvr. George Owen of 818 North Circular Road, reverted to his civilian trade of baker and pastrycook in Holland recently, and it was mainly due to his efforts that a party for 270 Dutch children was such an unqualified success. Dvr. Owen is in an RASC company which has been very hospitably received in a Dutch village and in return for the hospitality the children were invited to a party. They nearly all received gifts in addition to eatables. The men had saved their rations and Dvr. Owen performed miracles with the ordinary army fare. The men of the company had contributed £80 towards the presents for the children and everyone had subscribed their chocolate ration. In return the children contributed Dutch folk songs, and carols and accordion solos.’ George was survived by his parents Joseph and Gladys Owen, his wife Johanna Owen, and his beloved children June and Georgina Owen. George is now laid to rest at Becklingen War Cemetery near Soltau in Germany.
