About
256630C/Cpl William Henry Gibbins
British Army 8th Btn Royal Artillery King's Shropshire Light Infantr
from:Tenbury Wells Worcs
(d.2000)
William Henry Gibbins was my father.
He passed away in 2000, in Ontario Canada. Just before he passed, he gave me his Record of Service. It indicates he was with K.S.L.I. from 1940-01-14 to 1943-02-11.
From there he went to C.M.P. from 1943-02-12 to 1946-05-29. While a member of the Military Police, he went to Germany shortly after D Day, and was overseas for the majority of the war.
I have added several of the many photos I have that Dad brought home and kept over the years. Although these were not taken when he was in KSLI, as I don't believe he went to Germany until he joined the Military Police
I believe he said he was in the 8th Battalion; and he mentioned the long marches they did for training.
He didn't speak much of his time in the military, until 2 weeks prior to his death (lung cancer).
I have always wanted to find any military documents which will give the family more information on his service to England, and to add to the Army Form W5258 document I have, and the 4 medals he received from his time in the military - along with the many photo's I have in my collection that he gave me.
I have tried many other sites on the internet, and I am a member of Ancestry but I cant seem to find information on his service record anywhere.
Please add my Dad's name to the list of Servicemen who served with KSLI from 1940 to 1943.
Thank you

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
