Able Sea. John Robert Rice HMS Valkyrie

John Rice served on HMS Pembroke and HMS Valkyrie.

Telegr. Trevor Rees Jones HMS Royal Arthur

My father-in-law, Trevor Jones, served in the Royal Navy as a telegrapher from 16 December 1943 to 2 June 1946. He started his training at HMS Royal Arthur (16-22 Dec 1943) - does anyone have a record of the Class Number for this date? He then moved to HMS Valkyrie II (23 Dec 1943 - 21 Jun 1944), then transferred briefly to HMS Drake (Devonport). His first active service was on HMCS Qu'Apelle (re-named from HMS Foxhound) in July 1944. In late 1944 he sailed in a flotilla of landing craft via the Med to Ceylon, before taking part in landings in Malaysia in August 1945. After guarding Japanese POWs on Rempang Island he eventually returned to UK in June 1946.

Able Sea. Thomas Eyres HMS Urley

My dad, Thomas Eyres, volunteered for the Royal Navy in 1943 at the age of 16. He did not speak much about his time at sea except that he was in the Indian Ocean and around Burma and Malaya. He was on HMS Lanka from 17th of August 1945 to 30th of Novemeber 1945 and later 21st of April 1946 ro 22nd of May 1946. I know that he was a qualified PFF from Feb 1944 but am unsure what this is. We only found this out when writing his eulogy after he died aged 86. He was trained on HMS Drake and served on HMS Urley, Nightjar, Valkyrie, Highflyer and Bambara as well as Lanka. I also know that he was in the concert party on some ships. I am now trying to find more information to pass on to his grandson.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
