Fus. Joseph English . British Army 7th Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers from Ashington
My Dad, Joseph English, went to France with the BEF in April 1940 aged 26. He was in the 7th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in the machine gunners assigned to the 51st Highland Division and was one of the men left behind to fight with the French to try and hold back the Geemans after the Dunkirk rescue.
He was captured at St Valery-en-Caux and marched to a POW camp Stalag IXC in Bad Sulza. He was then sent to a work camp where, because he had been a miner back in Ashington before the war, he was sent to a salt mine every day. Because of the poor food and conditions he had endured he eventually became very unwell with a perforated ulcer and other ailments and was sent to the camp hospital.
He was one of the soldiers to be repatriated in October 1943 by the Red Cross via Sweden on one of the hospital ships back to Leith in Scotland and then back by train to his home town of Ashington. He was the first POW to return to Ashington and had a heroe's welcome much to his disdain and had a visit from the local councillor and attended afternoon tea in his honour at the town hall.

Johnny R. Enlow . USAAF
My uncle, Johnny R. Enlow, is listed as Crew Chief with Frenesi. I assume that means Flight Engineer/top turret. I have a photo of him standing with the bomber.
Gordon Ennion . British Army 1st Battalion Border Regiment
My uncle, Gordon Ennion, served in the 1st Airlanding Brigade in WW2 - as part of the 1st Border Regt. He never spoke much about his army service but I know he 'escaped'from a Germao POW camp after Arnhem and actually made his way back to England. He also, as a glider anti-tank man, suffered the chaos of Sicily when many of the Brigade actually drowned. I know my uncle swam to shore when his glider broke up. He was taken prisoner at Arnhem and it seems was inprisoned in Hohenstein POW Camp, from which he somehow escaped. Such people are heroes and what they did should never ever be forgotten. My uncle Gordon is worth ten of me - and of everyone I know.
Pte. George Ennis . British Army Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
I don't know for certain that my mum's cousin George Ennis served through WW2 with the Highlanders, but it is very likely he did. I have a photograph of the QOCH cross-country team dated 7th April 1937 taken at Inverness depot, when it seems they were beaten 220 to 97 by Seaforth Highlanders.
F/Sgt. Roy Milton Ennis . Royal Canadian Air Force 415 Sqdn. (d.31st July 1942)
I am looking for any first hand information regarding members of 415 Squadron around 1941-1942:
W/O H. McComb F/Sgt H. Bloomfield Sgt J. Labelle Sgt R. Ennis Update
W/O McComb, F/Sgt Labelle and F/Sgt Ennis are all buried in North Coates (St Nicholas) Churchyard. Their aircraft crashed when it returned early from convoy protection. It had engine problems and overshot the runway. It looks as though F/Sgt Bloomfield may have survived as he is not listed on the CWG website.

Sgt. Benjamin Entwistle . British Army Royal Signals from Manchester
My father Benjamin Entwistle joined the regular Army in September 1938 in Manchester and enlisted in the Royal Signals. He was sent to Belgium as part of the BEF in September 1939 and returned in June 1940. From June 1944 to Sept 1945 he was with the staff of Gen. B. Horrocks. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 after a spell in Palestine. This is all that I know about his service.

Fus. Thomas Entwistle . British Army Royal Irish Fusiliers from Darwen, Lancs
My father Thomas Entwistle did not speak much about his service. I have some of his Medals including the Africa Star and other Star Medals. His POW No was 267902 from Stalag IV, Oschatz, Saxony. I am not sure if these details are correct.
W. Entwistle . British Army from Lancashire
I have found this poem in my grandfather's war journal from when he was a POW at the German prison camp of Stalag IV-B Muhlberg, Germany. This W. Entwistle was captured 29th of May 1940 at Dunkirk. Since the poem is written in the journal, he must have also been a POW at Stalag IV-B Muhlberg along with my grand father.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
