LC Etheridge .     British Army Royal Artillery

LC Etheridge served with the Royal Artillery British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Sgt. Ronald Etheridge .     Royal Air Force 61 Sqdn   from Manchester

(d.14/15th April 1940)

My father Ronald Etheridge was a pilot with 61 Squadron and went missing whilst on a gardening op on 14th April 1940. Over many years I have been unable to establish what happened to his Hampden as all the crew were listed as missing presumed killed. Possibly another aircraft taking part in that raid returned and somewhere somebody may have just a little information. I have recently provided the authorities with a copy of my father's birth certificate enabling the record at the Runnymede Memorial to now show his correct age at death as 23 and not 35 as previously stated. Any snippets of information about my father or his fellow crew members would be appreciated.

Pte. Albert Edward Evans .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps   from Birmingham

(d.17th June 1940)

Sadly, on 17th June 1940 my great grandfather went down with the Lancastria leaving behind two daughters and a wife. I am trying on behalf of my great aunty (his daughter) to contact anyone who knew her father or has any information or photographs of him that she will not have seen, or any last memories of him.

His details are from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission as follows: 132843 Private Albert Edward Evans Royal Army Service Corps Son of Albert Edward and Mary Eliza Evans and husband of Edith Maude Evans (Wakelin) of Coventry (UK) Daughters: Margaret Alma Evans and Geraldine Brenda Blackwell (Evans) He was from Wales but lived in Birmingham.

2nd Lt Albert Evans .     USAAF 97th Bomb Group 341st Bombardment Sqn   from Michigan

Albert Evans served with the US Army Air Force, 341st Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group in WW2.

Sgt. Alexander Spence Evans .     Royal Air Force   from Liverpool

My Uncle Alex Evans's plane took a hit over Germany early in 1944. He was injured with shrapnel wounds. His Canadian fellow crew members decided to eject him from the plane so strapped his parachute onto him. He was then captured by the German forces and taken to a POW camp.

He first appears in records as arriving 24th of April 1944 at Stalag Luft 6 from Dulag Luft. He was then kept in Stalag 357 until repatriation home to Liverpool. His name appears several times in documents recording his detention. His POW number being 3536.

As we understand it the aircraft he was in crashed with the loss of the entire Canadian crew. We have a photograph of him with this crew. His wounds were treated by German doctors although he suffered pain in his legs throughout his life as some shrapnel remained. Whilst being held his name was mentioned more than once on broadcasts by Lord Haw Haw and it was said he was 'crying for his mother'. So cruel. An endearing family man, much loved. He died in 1992.

Arthur Evans was my great uncle. I know very little about him at all, except the details from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, he is buried at the Taukkyan War Cemetery outside Yangon formerly Rangoon. If anyone has any memories I would love to hear them.

Pte. Benjamin Evans .     British Army 1st Btn. Welch Regiment   from Chapel Row, Nantyglo, Breconshire

My late father Benjamin Evans joined the West Monmouthshire Regiment in 1939, aged 20. After basic training, he transferred to the 1st Battalion, Welch Regiment where he trained for desert warfare. Then he sailed from Plymouth around Africa to Egypt. In 1940, he saw action in the battles of Mersa Matruh and Bardia. In 1942, he was captured by Italian troops and was a POW in Italy until the Italians capitulated. He then became a POW of the Germans, who took him to a camp in Poland where he remained until early 1945, when the Russians were closing in from the east and the Germans marched all of the POWs to a camp at Lamsdorf in Germany. Along the way he had frostbite, which resulted in all of his toes being amputated. He was liberated from Lamsdorf by the Americans and flown back home where he spent a year in hospital, being discharged in 1946.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
