Malcolm Erskine gained the rank of Brigadier in the service of the Scots Guards. Capt. Ralph Barrie Erskine . British Army 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders from Glenafton, Church Road, Wimbledon
(d.23rd April 1943)
Barrie Erskine was born in January 1918, two weeks after his father Captain Ralph Erskine RFC was killed in Italy when his Sopwith Camel was shot down behind enemy lines. Educated at Harrow, Barrie was by all accounts a charming man with some unconventional habits such as standing in front of an open fire and lifting his kilt to warm his bottom! He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1940 and was killed in action while laying telephone cables at the Battle of Longstop Hill on 23rd of April 1943.
L/Cpl. William Baird Erskine MID.. British Army 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders from Falkirk
William Erskine joined the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at the beginning of the war. He married in 1941 and had 1 son. He fought in the successful North African campaign. He was then sent to Sicily and to the Italian campaign. He was promoted to Lance Corporal sometime then.
Somewhere in the push northwards through Italy he was captured by the German army and perhaps that was when he was listed as missing on 27th of October 1943. He was actually forced to march through Germany and onto Torgua in Eastern Germany where he was held POW in Stalag 4d. He was made to work in local armaments companies where on the production lines he deliberately pierced holes in the wrong places. He also escaped on 2 occasions but was recaptured each time. He was released by the Russian advance and returned home to Scotland at the end of the war when he met his 4 year old son for the first time. He was awarded the following medals: The Italy Star, The Africa Star, The 1939-1945 Star and the War Medal 1939-1945.

My uncle, Glyn Escot, was an aircraft fitter in 205 (Heavy Bomber) Group during WWII. I have seen many fascinating photos of enemy aircraft that were recovered and stripped down. Also a photo of Mt. Vesuvius enrupting.
Frank Esdale . British Army Royal Tank Regiment
Our grandad Frank Esdale served with Monty in Italy driving a tank as far as we know. We know that he had a Polish friend who served with him. This gentleman took photos and also painted. The Corps also had a football team which Frank played for. We think that he may have got into some sort of trouble with his CO and was reduced to the ranks. Any info about this would be great as it is a mystery and we would like to get to the bottom of it.

Sgt. Joseph Etchells . Royal Army Medical Corps from Manchester
LAC. Robert Etchells . Royal Air Force from Failsworth
My father Robert Etchells enlisted in the RAF in July 1940 at RAF Padgate. He started as an AC2, then AC1 and then a LAC. I believe he became a motorcycle dispatch rider for the RAF.
Unfortunately, he had to be discharged in August 1942 following some sort of accident where he lost his right leg below the knee. Does anyone remember him or do they remember anything about his accident?
Tpr. Alfred Edwin Etches . British Army 4th Queens Own Hussars
Alf Etches was my uncle. As a reservist he was called up immediately WW2 broke out and was sent to Greece as part of the 2nd Armoured Division following the Greek request for assistance in the face of German and Italian invasion.Because of the enemy's superior strength the British troops were forced to evacuate and on the night of 28th/29th April 1941 as he was awaiting embarkation from the port of Kalamata, Alf was captured. He was taken to a temporary camp in Salonika and then dispatched to Stalag 18A, Wolfsburg. From here he was sent to work camps at Niklasdorf(924/GW) and Peggau (119/GW). He said that he was one of the luckier PoW's in that he wasn't assigned heavy manual work such as in the quarry or timber mill. He added that the camp commander, Kommandant Steiner, was a fairly amiable man. As the War came to an end he was transferred back to Stalag 18A to await liberation. There was a scare however when US aircraft mistakenly bombed the camp. A number of huts were damaged and there were some casualties. When Alf returned to his home in Wandsworth he was dreadfully thin but he had a loving wife, Violet, who made a great fuss of him and he was soon back to his cheery self.Like many others he was reluctant to talk about his experiences though.
He had a number of jobs such as house painting and storekeeping. He and Vi led a quiet life and had no children. Alf died on the 19th January 1988 of a heart attack. The photo shows Alf (standing on the extreme left) in the camp, presumably after a game of football. I would be interested if anyone could identify his comrades in the photo.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
