Henry Ireton of 663 Artisan Works Company, Royal Engineers lost his life in the sinking of the Lancastria.




Rfm. Samuel David "Boy" Irons .     British Army 2nd Btn. Kings Royal Rifle Corps   from Bermondsey

I am trying to trace the war history which relates to Samuel David Irons, army no:6850848 of the 2nd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was a pow in Stalag 344.

Cpl. Stephen Charles Irons .     British Army 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment   from Sidcup, Kent

(d.12th Sept 1943 )

Stephen Irons was the much loved 6th child of 10 children (including two sets twins) born to Charles Clarke Irons and Martha Linda Webber, who lived at 47 Days Lane, Sidcup before the war, and later in Sharsted Street, Kennington, London.

Stephen died at Salerno on 12th of Sept 1943 and is buried there in the Commonwealth War Commission Graveyard at Provincia di Salerno, Campania, Italy.

James Balfour Irvine .     South African Army

My grandfather was a South African soldier who ended up at Stalag 4B via an Italian camp after he was captured in Tobruk. I have all his letters, including telegrams from the Vatican radio listeners that they posted to my grandmother whenever they heard news of him. I have found the rehabilitation booklet which POWs were given on their return to civilisation.




Pte. John Irvine .     British Army 50 Coy. Aux. Military Pioneer Corps   from Ligoniel, Belfast

(d.17th Jun 1940)

I have a newspaper cut out relating to the death of my great uncle John Irvine, no dates are given. My grandmother told me he died as the result of some sort of automotive accident, the day before he was to be sent home. On the cut out it mentions that his father (my great grandfather) was a member of the military police and died at Dunkirk, 1940. My grandmother told me that someone from the same area they lived, in Belfast, had last seen him in the water and in turn told my great grandmother this on his return. It was presumed he drowned as he couldn't swim.




Spr. Thomas Irvine .     British Army 192nd Docks Operating Company Royal Engineers (d.24th Feb 1944)

Thomas Irvine died aged 28. He was born in South Shields in 1919 the son of Thomas and Ellen Irvine (nee Murray) of Jarrow.

Thomas is buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

F/Sgt. Frederic Cleveland Irving .     Royal Canadian Air Force 153 Squadron (d.16th January 1945)

My brother, Frederic Irving, was stationed with 153 Squadron at Scampton. He was last heard of on 16th January 1945 when he left on an operation to bomb an oil plant in Seitz and was reported lost without trace. All crew members were presumed dead.

S/Sgt. Hal Irving .     USAAF 449th Fighter Sqd.




T/Sgt. Henry D. Irving .     USAAF 69th Bomb Sqd.

My older Brother, T/Sgt Henry D. Irving, served with the 13th AF/42 Bomb Gp/69th Bomb Sqd in the South Pacific from early 1943 until Invasion of the Phillipines. He was a Radio-Gunner on a B-25 flying over Japanese held territory. He was based for some time on Guadacanal and did an R & R period at Christ Church NZ. Sgt Irving was awarded a number of Medals for his actions including The Air Medal with several clasps.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
