Pte. Thomas Irwin . British Army Leicestershire Regt from Askam-in-Furness
My father Tomas Irwin enlisted in the Leicestershire Regimentt in 1934 (he was born in 1918, which makes his age 16 but it shows his date of birth on his discharge papers as 1916) the only information on his active service is from his medals, POW and discharge records. My father never spoke to me about the war but through snippets of family conversation he served in Palastine from 1936-1939, next he apparently joined the commandos and was posted to the Middle East he was captured on Crete and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 4a in Hohenstein. This was a region in Germany that was not a good place to be hence the silence about his war experience.
If anyone has any further information I would be pleased to know about it.

Though my Dad Frank Issac, talked little of his war experiences he left us with a diary from February 1945 to June 1945 with the towns he went through in that time. I was able to map his tour through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. We also have a Christmas dinner menu for 1943, signed by fellow service men: Ted Marsden, J Stewart, Dai Jenkin, Harry Owen, GE Baker, H Walker, Jock Williamson, H Watson, W.Parry, JD Dean, W Duggan, C Payne,L Hill and F Farrington.

My Granda, Gordon Isaac, served with 100 squadron as a Flight Engineer from 1943 - 1945. He completed over 30 missions. My mam told me that his hair turned white after one mission! My mam has the letter from the Air Ministry in 1943 confirming that he had been selected to train for the RAF.
He became an electrician after the war and after moving to London he worked for Thames Television. He lived in Muswell Hill and was a member of Muswell Hill Golf Club. He lived near Whitley Bay and moved to London when my mam was 15. My mam was born in that house and still lives there today. I only met him a few times but he was a real gentleman. I was based in Honiton at Fairfield House, New Street around 1947/48. I would love to hear from any other Land Girls who served in the same location. I remember names Vera Razey, Doris Lowe, Mary Yates, Enid Roberts, Florrie Bailey, May Kehoe, Gertie Cooke and wonder if they are still around.
Robert T Isaac DFM. Royal Air Force 76 Sqd
A.B. Douglas J. Isaacs . Royal Navy HMS Nelson (d.12th Aug 1942)
F/Lt. George Arthur "Pop" Isaacs DFM/. Royal Air Force 223 Squadron from Hornchurch, Essex
My father, George Isaacs was a mid upper gunner and completed his first tour in Lancasters with 61 Squadron. 223 Squadron was his second operational tour and he took the Official Secrets Act very seriously. He did not breath a word about 100 Group Spoof operations until 30 years after the war ended and two years before his death. When he told me he flew in B17s and B24s I thought he was pulling my leg. My abiding memory was his description of the crew standing well apart from the aircraft as German speaking Radio Operators were loaded into a secure compartment in the middle of the aircraft before take off and the procedure reversed on landing. Strictly no fraternisation. I recall his droll remark that they would be last out if the plane was hit also.
To get some idea of the equipment that was used on these operations I recommend Martin Streetly's book "Confound & Destroy" the story of 100 Group's WW2 activity in Norfolk. I donated my copy to the library at the 100 Group museum at Blickling Hall.

Hugo Isberner was captured and held as POW D410910 in the Camp at Garswood Park, Ashton-in-Makerfield.
Sgt. George Wallace "Judd" Isherwood . British Army Royal Army Service Corps from Blackburn. Lancashire
My Uncle, George Isherwood was on board SS Empress of Asia when it was bombed and sunk in Feb 1942 off Singapore. He stepped onto an Australian destroyer without even getting his feet wet! He was captured several days later in Singapore without firing a shot and incarcerated in Changi jail. At the end of the war he was on board a transport taking him and thousands of others to Japan as slave labour.
We learned very little of his time in Changi, like so many others he was most reluctant to talk about it and destroyed virtually all records and letters that he sent to his family and fiancé. It was only from one of his friends, Sgt Gwyn Jones from Coed Poeth we learned that he had been picked upon frequently for beatings by the Japs (Nips as they called them) due to his small size. Apparently, the Japs singled out anyone especially tall or small. Gwyn incidentally managed to hide from the Japs an exquisite gold ring which contained a watch, I saw it a few years later when he visited us.
George refused all medals etc. awarded to Service personnel after the war. On their return he sailed in the former liner Sobieski which called at Cape Town where they were treated like kings, fed, feted and taken into private homes. On their arrival back at Southampton the dockers were on strike. The men almost mutinied wanting to unload the ships themselves. The were given rice pudding as a desert for their first meal, it hit the floor and the ceilings.
Their return for compassionate leave was appallingly handled; in the end several squaddies from N E Lancashire commandeered a truck and got home that way. A few years ago I read an account -sadly I cannot recall the author's name - from somone in the area of N E lancs who was on the same lorry and actually refers to dropping George and another of his friends off almost at their front doors.
George who had no children, died around 10yrs ago still suffering physically and mentally from his experiences whilst in captivity.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
