And stationed at Stalag 12a to 9b Linburg an der Lahn, hessen-nassau, Prussia 50-08. He served from 1941-1946.

I am looking for any info on him I can find. I have sent out for his records and hope to receive them. My mother has his pics, medals, his letters, and dicharge papers. His name is Donald W. Pte. Gwenneth Pauline Lawrence .     Auxiliary Territorial Service

My mum, Gwen Lawrence was 14 when the second world war broke it. Her mother wanted her to be evacuated to Canada but she refused to go. My grandmother lived in a pub in Portsmouth and the city was badly bombed.

My mum was worried that the war would be over before she could enlist and do her bit. So as soon as she turned 16 yrs she and a friend tried to join the land army and the WAAF, but both wanted to see your birth certificate. The ATS, however, was desperate for young women to join up and didn't request to see a birth certificate. So two weeks after my mum's 16th birthday she persuaded her mother to sign the necessary papers for her to join up. She and her friend went to Droitwich initially to the ATS Training Centre and then mum trained as a plotter.

She worked at RAF Uxbridge, relaying the plots from the RAF to the ack-ack guns and she was there during the invasion of Europe on 6th of June 1944. Soon after this mum was sent to Naples, Italy a long journey by ship and it was while she was there that the end of the war was proclaimed. Obviously not everyone could be sent back to the UK at the same time. Mum was sent on a music course in Florence just to pass the time while waiting for demob. She was billeted in a hotel which is still there now. When she entered the hotel there was a man sitting in the reception area who was playing the piano. He made sure he sat next to my mum during the course and they soon became more than friends. This man was Maurice White, and after the war they returned to the UK and were married in February 1947. They were together for 65 years before Dad died in 2012 and then Mum in 2013.

Sgt. Harold Raymond Lawrence .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve No. 576 Squadron   from Hull

(d.31st Mar 1944)

Harold Lawrence was an air gunner on a Lancaster, and he died in the infamous Nuremburg raid by Lancaster bombers of RAF 576 Squadron (and others). Shot down and buried by locals, he was reburied in 1957 (I think) in Berlin War Grave Commission Cemetery. One of his brothers, Bernard, was my father.

Sgt. Henry Northall Lawrence .     British Army Royal Scots Fusiliers   from London

Henry Lawrence served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in WW2. In his uniform picture, the three chevrons show his rank as Sergeant. Infantry sergeants wore the red sash. No medals. His uniform appears to be 'Patrol', similar to later No. 1 dress, unusual but probably retained pre-1939 service. The tartan trousers are those of the Scots Fusiliers.

JA Lawrence .     British Army

JA Lawrence served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

My father James Lawrence came across from Canada in 1939 with the 4th Field Ambulance. However, he volunteered to become a Commando and was sent for training by the English to Scotland. He went on many raids, mainly in the Mediterranean, France and Italy. I have his medals and would like to do a short history on him for future generations. All I know is the training was at Spainbridge, but am unable to get any information. .

Sgt. James Douglas Lawrence .     British Army Royal Artillery   from Plaisto, East London

James Lawrence was my father and used to tell me many stories as a child when I asked him. He told me the bad ones as I got older but he was the bravest man I've ever met. I just wish I could remember his regiment number. He was a gun commander on a 25 pounder but that's all I remember - apart from how to load one, which is worrying.

Pte. John Henry Lawrence .     Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps (d.29th May 1942)

John Lawrence was 29 when he died. He is buried in the Hong Kong Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Cape Collison Road Road, Chai Wang, Hong Kong Island, Grave HV. Row 3. Grave 705.

At age 29 Ken was working for BOAC a position he held until 3rd June 1946. He subsequently began flying commercially in the Middle East until about 1952. Eventually, he returned to Canada where during May 1994 he died in Ottawa.

Capt. Roger Fettiplace Lawrence MID..     British Army 172 Field Regt. 155 Bty Royal Artillery   from Mickleham, Dorking

    (d.15th Jan 1944)

My Uncle Roger Lawrence was my mother's younger brother. He was captured in Tunisia on 26th February 1943 after his unit had taken part in the epic Battle of Sidi Nisr against German tanks. They were nicknamed the "VC Battery", though none of them received VCs, it's said because there were too many casualties and men captured. But they enabled the British advance on Tunis.

Roger was taken to a prison camp in Italy, and if anyone who reads this recongises his name and knows which camp I'd be grateful. I have strong memories of my grandmother in Red Cross uniform at a centre for sending parcels to POWs, I think in Guildford.

After the fall of Italy in September 1943 Roger, like most POWS, went on the run and tried to get to Allied lines. But in January 1944 he was with another British soldier in a barn when they were surprsied by Gestapo. The other Briton froze and lived to tell the tale, but Roger made a movement and was shot. We had fuller details in the family, but they have been mislaid. If anyone knows more, I should be so grateful.

One of my strongest war memories, and the most painful, is of my mother rushing upstairs in tears when the news of his death reached us.

Pte. Thomas John Lawrence .     British Army Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry

Tom Lawrence passed away in 2010 leaving behind a family of 3 girls and a boy, a family who didn't really know the man? It quite by chance that I found a newspaper clipping of his marriage, this gave no more than the regiment he had served in, I also remember how he would talk of how he had been in Germany while serving. That would make him about 20 in the late 40s, there is no other information, just a reference to the Oxford & Buckinghamshire Regiment, following his discharge he worked as a printer, or in a printing environment in Bletchley, Milton Keynes. I am his son-in-law and the question asked was can you find anything else? My answer was, I don't know but at least I will try. I'm sorry to burden you with this and without the relevant info, but I hope you understand, like most families it is not until those most important go that you realise how empty life can be. Can anyone help?

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
