Alexander Ross Little . Royal Air Force from Bleirvaddach
My father Alexander Little, was in the RAF and was captured early on in the war, he never spoke about it. I have his dog tag from Stalag X1A. My aunt remembers he was in the 200 mile march keeping ahead of the advancing troops, also he drank some evaporated milk from a tin they found as they were all starving and he went down with a severe stomach upset. He never liked Alsation dogs because they were let loose at night and ran around underneath their huts, this is all I know.

Capt. Archibald Little . British Army Seaforth Highlanders from Selkirk, Scotland
Archibald Thomas Little . British Army 10th Btn. Somerset Light Infantry from Simonsbath, Exmoor
SSG. Charlie H. Little . US Army Company D. 4th Infantry Regiment from Winterville, NC
Charlie Little enlisted on the 5th of Nov. 1941 at Fort Bragg, NC, Became a Staff Sergeant in Company D Fourth Infantry.
He was in the African Middle Eastern theater and then part of the invasion of Italy where he was captured. He told me he and another soldier became separated from his company and hid in a bomb creator. The other soldier fell asleep and began to snore. The noise gave them away and the other soldier refused to be captured and was killed. Dad was put on a train and ended up in Stalag 3b.
According to my Dad, cigarettes and chocolate from the Red Cross packages were used to trade for items to build a crystal radio from the German guards. Each part was kept by a POW for safe keeping during the day. At night they would put it together and listen to the news. The German guard propaganda was that the Allies had lost the war but the POWs knew different. One day the guards just left the camp. While listening to the radio they knew Germany had lost. They were able to locate the nearest US troop location. A small group including my dad chose to leave the camp and found the US troops and were liberated.
He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Good Conduct medals.

Pantryman James Little . Naval Auxiliary Personnel HMS Forfar from Waterloo, Lancashire
(d.2nd Dec 1940)
Pte. James William George Little . British Army Royal West Kent Regiment from Dover, Kent
Until his final year before his death my father, Jim Little would not tell me how he was captured. It seems they were in a farm house in France covering the rearguard at Dunkirk. He did the 800 mile march to Poland & spent the rest of WW2 at Stalag v111b. He was sent down the local coal mines. He passed away in 1986. I am still in contact with his best army mates and children.
John Little . British Army Royal Army Service Corps from 164 Holmesdale Road, South Norwood
I am hoping that someone will remember my father John Little. He was in the R.A.S.C. with the 8th Army in Palestine until about 1945. He married my mother Stella Brown in November 1939. They lived in South Norwood, London.
Prior to going to Palestine, some of his training was done in North Walsham, Norfolk, and Herne Bay in Kent, and possibly in Hastings, Sussex. For a time he was a medical orderly. (I believe after he had had his appendix removed). I do have an Egyptian newspaper cutting with a photo of him with other medical staff taken at this time. I believe he also undertook administration work.
For a while he was seconded to a regiment from New Zealand. He became friends with an Australian who gave him a wooden napkin ring for his daughter (me) who was born in July 1946. He was a guard in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado" (presumably put on by soldiers) at the Cairo Royal Opera House. He played piano in the officers' mess. He also played accordion and clarinet.
He returned to England and was then sent to Norway. I never thought to ask why or for how long. I hope there is someone who may remember. I feel that time is running out now and I am very sorry that I did not question him further.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
