I am trying to trace any infomation about my grandad, John Littlewood, I do remember as a child that he would wake-up from his sleep in tears dreaming about what they did to him in the POW camp. I think I once saw a history programme on Sky he was in a photo in Camp 4 or 5, he was helping to build the bridge over the river Kwai Burma. What I do know is that he was shot twice in escapping when they blew the bridge up but lived to tell us his horrific story as to what happened then. one bullet was lodged in his neck and was only removed about ten years before his death.

He was orignially from Hillgate, Stockport, Cheshire. He was a cook in the Army and was shipped out to Burma. He also had a brother called Frank who was based in Eygpt.

Cpl. Montague Littman .     Royal Air Force

My late Uncle Monty Littman always told me that he served in India during the last war but only recently was I able to see photographic proof of his service after speaking to my aunt who was his widow. He died in 1992.

He joined the RAF in 1942 age 18 and was a trained barber/hairdresser. When they asked for volunteers to become army barbers he refused to put his hand up. However he volunteered to become a wireless operator which is the position he held there until 1947. His demobilisation was quite late because he enjoyed his job so much. However, family pressures caused him to come back to England where he resumed work as a hairdresser for the rest of his life until he retired.

My Aunt Jean gave me 15 or so photos of him on active service in India which I think make an interesting record of his career.

Able Sea. Peter Alan Litty .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson   from Ely

Samuel Livermore .     Royal Navy H.M.S. Mauritius   from Newcastle Upon Tyne

Sam Livermore was my late uncle, he died in 2007 During WW2 he had served in the Royal Navy, and had seen action in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic. I believe that he may have been a Stewards in the O.M. but had a Battle Station manning AA guns. I can only remember the name of one ship that he served on, and that ship was Mauritius. It was on that ship that he received a dunking on crossing the equator. I still have in my possession both the certificate of crossing signed by ( of course ) Neptune, and some photos of the ceremony which was held in a makeshift pool made from canvas and poles. Uncle Sam had many a tale to tell.... of aircraft attacks upon the ships and so on, but most stories were of ordinary men who became the best of pals and shipmates, and some of those friendships lasted beyond the war. Life was hard below decks.

To anyone who reads this, I am so proud of all of my uncles who served, and sadly some who died, in giving me the life and the experiences that I have enjoyed. Most have now passed. God bless them all

Sqd.Ldr. John Philip Liversidge .     Royal Air Force 178 Squadron   from Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia

My father, John Liversidge, whom I never really knew because I was so young. He was an educator in the small rural town of Castlemaine in Victoria, Australia. After pre-service training in Australia and Canada he became part of the RAF Bomber Command.

In August 1944, 178 Squadron were involved in flying from Italy to Poland to drop supplies in support of the Warsaw uprising. On the night of 16/17th August Squadron Leader Liversidge was navigator of a B-24 Liberator bomber that was shot down over Krakow in Poland. If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
