World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Sgt. Frederick Albert Pegg .     British Army 1st Btn. Reconnaissance Regiment   from Leicester

(d.13th Feb 1944)

Frederick Pegg was the son of Albert Earnest Pegg, who died during WW1 and Edith Matilda Pegg. Husband of Ada Pegg.

Ord. Seaman J. G. Pegg .     Royal Navy HMS Forfar

Pegg is listed as one of the survivors when the Forfar was sunk.

Sgt. John Herd Peggie MM.     British Army 4th Queens Own Hussars

Sgt.John Herd Peggie served with the 4th Queens Own Hussars British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: The Wartime Memories Project is no longer in contact with Dan , his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Sgt. Geoffrey Charles Peggs .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 467 Sqdn. (d.28th July 1943)

My uncle, Sgt Peggs, was an engineer in the RAFVR. He was killed in action on 28th July 1943 on his first mssion with 467 Squadron, which was based at RAF Waddington. He is commemorated on Panel 161 at Runnymede.

Sgt. Thomas Pegler .     Royal Air Force 219 Squadron   from Whitchurch, Herefordshire

Dad, Tom Pegler was the navigator of Mosquito FK-E piloted by Jack Bremner, who was from the London area. He would never tell anyone what they were detailed to do, other than theirs was a Night Fighter Squadron. He did tell me, however, one summer morning retuning to Acklington over the North Sea, the tops of the clouds were perfectly flat, so being the 'good airmen' they were, they did several practice landings on the top of the clouds until they realised the rest of the section had disappeared. When they landed, everyone else had been back safely for several minutes and concern was shown for them. When he and Jack got to the briefing room, they were asked why they were late. 'Port engine, sir, got a bit hot so I shut it down' was the reply. After debrefing, they got their flying kit off and hit the sack. They hadn't been in bed long when the tannoy went, 'Will the crew of E for Easy report to the boss at once' (I use the word 'boss' because he never stated the rank of the man to whom they were answerable). They had to get their flying kit on again before they they went, but duly arrived. 'I've had that port engine run up - there's **** all wrong with it- now what were you actually doing?' '.'Practising landing on the clouds, sir.' I cannot repeat what was said, suffice it to say he went ballistic and their proverbial cards were marked. I believe they didn't do it again!

Tel. Ernest Leonard Pegrum .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson   from Hertfordshire

Just looking at my Grandfather’s naval service medals and they cover both wars. His names was Ernest Pegrum, he signed up in 1917 aged 15 and was on various training ships until August 1919 when he served on HMS Dragon. Ernest and his brother George (Royal Marine) were in Canada escorting HRH Prince of Wales and (I believe) the Royal Family and I have a postcard showing him and some of the crew at a roadside halt. A few months later in October/November HMS Dragon was involved in a conflict in Russia where she was involved in shelling the Latvian coast and sustained some casualties. My Grandfather was signed off in 1928.

I do not have the WWII service records yet but have a beautiful Crossing the Equator certificate dated 9.4.1941 with Cape Town in the background and the silhouettes of ships that were (presumably) in the convoy. I recall my mother saying he was torpedoed on HMS Nelson. I believe that he served on HMS Pasley in 1945. I understand around D Day the Nelson and the Dragon were in Portsmouth at the same time (I wonder what Grandad thought on seeing his old ship). HMS Dragon was later damaged in an attack and scuttled as a Mulberry harbour breakwater. I would just like him to be remembered. He never said much about it of course – or I was too young to listen.

Arthur C Peifer .       from Bloomington, IL.

Pte. Paul Henry Peillon .     New Zealand Medical Corps 6th Field Ambulance   from Auckland

My grandfather Paul Peillon was a stretcher bearer and orderly in the war. He was taken prisoner about 13th of December 1941 and held in PG52 in Italy. He was repatriated on 22nd of April 1943 and died in October 1947. I know very little beyond the small amount in his war record. Would love to know more if anyone can help.

HJW Peirce .     British Army

HJW Peirce served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Cpl. Alan "Jock" Peirson .     British Army 4th Btn. Green Howards   from Lingdale

P/O Ignatius Thomas Pelechaty. .     RCAF 426 Sqd. (d.30th Sep 1944 )

Frank Pelham .     British Army C Squadron Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry   from Walthamstow

My Grandad, Frank Pelham, was a Desert Rat Tank Driver and mechanic with the Notts Sherwood Rangers. I have several of his papers including a letter of congratulations on the birth of my auntie from Philis Mcgrath at the Old Comrades and Welfare Association, his pay & service book, a copy of his standing orders book for drivers, and a copy of the "8th Armoured Bridge" book.

I'm desperatly seeking any photos that may be in circulation, if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I'd like to make contact with anyone who may have served alongside my grandad in WW2

Pte. Albert Edgard Pelling .     British Army Wiltshire Regiment   from London

Bert Pelling was captured at or near Caen, France. He was a stretcher bearer who strayed picking up wounded. He was rounded up with others that had been captured and was moved across country to Stalag 4B Muhlberg (Elbe), where he was interned for a year.

A married man with a wife in England. He returned home to England and had a good life with his wife Jean, they had 5 Kids. They emigrated to Australia in the 70s following the kids who had emigrated before them. He died in 2002 at Langwarrin near Frankston, Australia, Jean died not long after. Rest in Peace.

CPO Lucius Leonard Pellow .     Royal Navy HMS Defiance   from Portsmouth

Cyril Pellowe .     Royal Air Force   from Polbathic, Cornwall

My dad was Cyril Pellowe. He was in the Royal Air Force and was taken prisoner on the island of Kos. I think he was then taken by train to Stalag 1Vb. He was only 22 years old. He told us some tales of his time there. I have his dog tag still but sadly he has now passed away. I have read that it was the Russians who liberated the prisoners from this camp but I am fairly sure that my dad said it was the Americans who liberated them.

LAC. Cyril Pellowe .     Royal Air Force   from Saltash, Cornwall

Cyril Pellowe was my dad. He was a prisoner of war in Stalag 3b. He didn't talk a lot about this time, just little things now and then. He was in the Air Force and was taken prisoner on the island of Kos. He said that all the prisoners gave anything they had to the children before it was taken by the Germans. When they were in the prison camp they were given injections using a cartridge pen and swapped some of their things from Red Cross parcels with the guards.

Chester Kingdon Peltier .     US Army Air Corp

My father Chester Peltier was stationed near Widnes, Lancashire during WW II. He was in the US Army Air Corp. While there he visited a family named Drummond. The wife was Alice. Her husband was in the RAF and they had a daughter named Freida who was about 6 years old in 1944 or 1945. When my father shipped out in 1945 he had over 200 letters that my mother wrote to him and we believe they may have bee entrusted to them for safe keeping but he was never able to see the Drummond's again before he left. Mom kept every letter he wrote her from 1943-1946 and I compiled them in a book and am hoping to find her letters to finish the story. My father passed in 2008, my mother is now 86 and March 7 would be their 67th wedding anniversary. The Drummond's lived in Widnes on Belvoir Road and also on St. Annes. It would be wonderful to find my mother's letters. Thanks in advance for your help.

PO A E Pemberton .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson

After the recent death of my mother-in-law, I found a silver cigarette case, which had the following inscription: A.E.Pemberton P.O. P/J 110609 "H.M.S. Nelson" 1939-1944. This seemed to be a strange object to find, because no-one in the family has any naval connections. If anyone could shed any light on the case, or a member of the family knows anything I would be most grateful. The case has what looks like a naval badge on the front. There is also a photograph of two men in navy white uniforms inside. My mother-in-law was from Leicester

Cpl. A. Pemberton .     British Army Pioneer Corps

Cpl A Pemberton, Pioneer Corps survived the sinking of the Lancastria.

Sea. Alfred Pemberton .     Royal Navy HMS Royal Arthur   from Leeds

Alfred Pemberton joined HMS Royal Arthur on 30th of July 1941. He went to Glasgow in January 1942 for a 12 week course. He left Chatham on 17th of June 17th 1942, left UK on 21st of June 1942, and arrived Gibraltar on 28th of June 1942 and was stationed inside the Rock. Eventually he moved to Caserta in Italy, which he left on 8th of January 1945, and arrived back in the UK on 27th of January 1945. For the last few months of the war he was stationed at the Admiralty in London.

Sto Thomas Herbert Pemberton .     Royal Navy HMS Drake   from Ruabon Wrexham

Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Norman Pendlebury was the Son of Arthur and Jessie Pendlebury, of Poynton, Cheshire. He was aged 21 when he died and is buried in the Magleby (Langeland) Churchyard in Denmark.

Edward Pendrill .     British Army Royal Artillery

My father, Edward Pendrill, Royal Artillery, was stationed in Richmond Park, London during the war. He served on anti-aircraft sites, mainly at Penponds. Does anyone have information, photos?

F/Sgt. G.E. A. Pendrill DFM..     97 Squadron

Cpl. Edward Penfold .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps   from Merton Park, Surrey.

(d.17th Jun 1940)

Gnr. Edward Charles Penfold .     British Army 6 Bty., 2nd Searchlight Regiment. Royal Artillery   from Hindon, Salisbury

(d.19th October 1946)

Near my home in Wilton, I found Edward Penfold’s war grave at the cemetery in Barford St Martin, near Wilton, Salisbury. He lies in a forgotten corner, the grave looking somewhat forlorn and a tad neglected. I checked on the CWGC website and found his grave records and who was his family. I shall shortly check to see if his family are still in the area, and offer to maintain his grave, as the site is listed as being cared for by relatives.

Today, 10th November, Remembrance Sunday, I commemorated his service with my own Act of Remembrance. RIP Gunner Edward Charles Penfold RA.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
