Maud Penn .     Women's Land Army

My dad Alan Aldred died recently. He was called up for service in the Second World War and met a landgirl from Sunderland called Maud Penn. My Dad was taken ill and went back to his home in Bedfordshire to recover. Maud wrote to my Dad but his mother did not deliver the letters to him, therefore Maud must have thought that Dad did not wish to keep in touch, which could not have been further from the truth.

I have since found several letters that Dad wrote about Maud. 50 years after he first met Maud, Dad wrote a letter stating how he had never forgotten her and how he had been trying to trace her for years.

Maud may have married, and there is a chance that she may no longer be alive. However, I feel that for Dad, I would like to see if I could trace Maud Penn or any of her family. My Dad was married to my mum for 52 years, but I know that he never forgot Maud.

If anyone remembers Maud, please contact me. I would love to find her so that I could pass Dad's message on to her, which he had tried to deliver himself for years without success.

Flt.Lt. Thomas Alfred Penn .     Royal New Zealand Air Force 487 Squadron   from Christchurch, New Zealand

Despite records to the contrary, of the twelve aircraft of 487 Squadron dispatched on Ramrod 16, two made it to the target, not one. Trent reported he was the only aircraft to reach the target. Not so. This has been well documented in recent years. When A Apple arrived at the power station and attempted to release its bombs, it was discovered the belly of the plane and its load were missing. Due to severe damage to the plane, it was forced to ditch in the channel where the survivors including my father Thomas Penn, were picked up by a Dutch fishing boat. All were held prisoners of war until the end of hostilities. 3rd May 1943 was a disaster for the Royal Air Force.

Pte. Sydney Douglas Penny .     British Army 1/8th Btn. D Coy, 15 Pl. Middlesex Regiment   from Wisbech

Sydney Penny served with the 1/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment in WW2 as a wireless operator to FOO for D Company's 4.2" mortars. He spent most days in a bren-gun carrier with the officer and driver while reconnoitering for the mortar line. He came ashore in Normandy with the 43rd Wessex Company, Royal Army Service Corps on about 24th June 1944. At first he was involved in the battles for Verson and Mouen and later, Maltot (he was left there with a handful of troops after the main force withdrew; the next morning our attack regained the village).

Later battles for Hill 112 and Mont Pincon found Sydney providing wireless contact for the mortar fire. He was wounded at the battle for the Noireau (the carrier Dauntless caught fire) and sent to England for recovery and returned to the unit at Louvain and served with the 8th Battalion until the end at Bremen.

Sydney's memories recalled the approach to Bremen. The Germans were adding sea-mines to the teller mines in the road with (we think) a ratchet detonator. It was most disconcerting to hear explosions behind you as well as in front, the result of which was a hole so big it needed a scissor-bridge to cover it (and no sign left of the vehicle that triggered it).

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
