Sgt. Eric H. Petford . Royal Air Force 11 Service Ferry Flight
My dad Sgt. Eric H Petford flew from RAF Kemble. I have a copy of a letter to his commanding officer reporting crash landing Blenheim K7048 whilst doing circuits. On the third one, his undercarridge failed to retract fully on take off due to an oil leak. He had to circle till crash crews took up station. I have been unable to find more on this, does anyone have any information?

Section Officer. Philip George "Pip" Pettifer . National Fire Service Grimsby from Vivian Avenue, Grimsby
My father, Pip Pettifer was an auctioneer and estate agent before the war and was in the AFS in Grimsby so, on call up, he joined the newly formed National Fire Service along with his great friend Charlie Brow. He served in Grimsby throughout the war, with spells as relief officer in the Blitz in both London and Liverpool.
When he married in 1941 he and his bride, May, travelled from the church on a fire engine. He was a keen cricketer and, at some point, played for the National Fire Brigade team at Lords, but who against I don't know. After the war he continued full time in the fire service until 1974, serving in the Holland County Fire brigade as Divisional officer and Deputy Chief.

Private Stanley Pettifer . British Army Royal Engineers from Witley, Surrey
My father, Stanley Pettifer, was captured at Dunkirk, aged 21. He said that he was a POW in Poland, probably in the Gdansk area. He was in Stalag XXA. He worked on a farm. I have several photos from the camp when they were performing shows. In some of them is the actor Sam Kydd.
I know that my father, towards the end of the war, was on a very long march, in deep snow, that lasted several weeks. I think about 3,000 men started out, and about 300 survived. My father survived by swapping his daily ration of cigarettes for chocolate. He spoke very little about his time as a POW, and I would really like to hear from anyone who remembers him or has any info at all. He died in 1982.
Pettigrew .
Pte. William Pettigrew . British Army Border Regiment
This image is of my Grandad William Pettigrew 's WW2 army unit and part of tracing his history is identifying his unit. I believe this to be a photo of the 'Border Regiment' but would like if possible for this to be confirmed. On the back of the original photo is a pencil note that just reads: '8PT' or '8FT' I don't know if this helps identify a sub unit or platoon etc.

Rflmn. Bernard Richard "Brudge" Pettit . British Army 9th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps from Battersea, London
(d.21st April 1941)
I found Bernard Pettit named on a grave stone that belonged to his mum and dad and wanted to find out what happened to him. Bernard was born c1918, his parents were Bernard Joseph and Helen Rosetta Pettit of Battersea, London. He died aged 23yrs, in Greece. The British Army tried to halt the Germans invading Greece, unfortunately they were unsuccessful in stopping them. Apparently they were poorly equipped. Having eventually being evacuated back to Egypt. Bernard belonged to 9th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps also known as The 1st Rangers.

L/Cpl. Henry William John Pettit . British Army 298G.T.Coy Workshops Royal Army Service Corps from London, England
My Dad,Henry W J Pettit, never talked a lot about his war years, he was called up to service on the 9th of January 1941 and returned from Italy to join a surgical sterilizer firm, GU Sterilizers on Hendon Way, London. I know he was in the 8th Army, RASC in 298 G.T.COY Workshops from 1942/3 and did not return home to his wife, my mother Joan and their first son, until 1946, I think.
He used to mention the horrors of the trip by ship down to Tripoli and Benghazi and then the very rough crossing by landing craft to Sicily, where he very much understated the violence and the sights he saw. I know then that he saw Brindisi, Assissi and then arrived in Rome with his remaining mates. I do not know if he passed via Cassino or Anzio-I suspect the latter. I think he did basic training on Salibury Plain and was released via Aldershot.
I have photographs of his team, and hope an old colleague or one of their family may recognize him.
I do know that his truck once slipped down a river gorge in torrential rains and at that precise moment, his photograph on his mother's mantelpiece in Paddington,London, fell off. We owe him and all those great soldiers everlasting gratitude and respect and love and we would love to know more about his war years.
LAC. James Pettit . Royal Air Force 88 Squadron from Doncaster, S. Yorks
My father, James Pettit, served in 88 Squadron during WW2. I have almost no information about his service, other than the locations of the squadron during that time.
Pte. James Pettit . British Army 1st Btn. Lincolnshire Regiment (d.3rd Feb 1945)
Cpl. Richard Frank "RF" Pettit . US Army Air Force 778th Sqdn. 464th Bombardment Group from Pattonville, Texas
He was the top turret gunner in a B-24 Liberator bomber when the aircraft was shot down over Vienna, Austria on March 22, 1945 during his 13th bombing mission.
After parachuting down into the middle of town, he was captured, taken to Graz, Austria, and imprisoned. Later, he was lined up with 12 other prisoners in front of a firing squad. They were then dismissed and told that they would be shot the next morning. He was force-marched and eventually ended up in Stalag 7a.
Terence Alfred Pettit . South African Army Royal Durban Light Infantry from Durban, South Africa
I recall my father, Terence Alfred Pettit of Durban, South Africa, telling us he was taken in Tobruk during WWII. He was in a German POW camp for 3 years but I don’t know where. Unfortunately I don’t even know what battalion he fought in, but I do know he represented the Royal Durban Light Infantry.
Cyril Pettitt . British Army 2nd Btn. Gordon Highlanders from Hounslow, Middlesex
(d.5th August 1944)
Cyril Pettitt signed up under age at 17 years old and went across to France in July 1944. He died in August 1944. His mother had passed away when he was 11 years old and he was very close to his younger sister who was heartbroken when the Padre broke the news that he had been killed in action.
Hilda Gladys Pettitt . Land Army from London
I was called up in June 1943 and sent to work for Lady Langham in Cadbury, Somerset on the dairy farm and later to work on the Wrington Vale Nurseries in Somerset. I was billited with Mrs. Exon in Congresbury. The owner of Wrington Vale Nursery was Graham Griffiths (who died about 1975) and the Manager was Bill Ridley. I am now 84 years old and live in Norfolk and would like to contact any-one who remembers me, especially Iris Johnson who I believe lived in Liverpool and Doreen Hynam who lived in Bristol. I left the Womens Land Army in 1946.

Sgt. Frank Petts . Royal Air Force 9 Squadron
Frank Petts was my grandfather. His stories of Battle of the Heligoland Bight are well documented so I won't repeat myself here. Half of the Wellingtons on this mission were lost, my grandfather was able to get his home though. Corgi models have made a replica of his aircraft and there exists a painting depicting his return from this mission.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
