World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Flt.Sgt. Stanley George Petts .     Royal Air Force 76 Sqdn.   from Canterbury, Kent

Rear Gunner Stanley Petts served with 76 Squadron.

Pte. Arthur Petty .     British Army 6th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment

Dad, Arthur Petty's 6th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment was attached to the 46th Brigade in 1940. They were trying to hold back the Germans to allow the evacuation from Dunkirk. He was involved in heavy fighting at St Omer. Apparently, they were in a battle with the 6th Panzer Division. He was captured at Wormhout trying to swim across the river L'yer to escape. He was taken as a POW to Torun Prison of war camp in Poland where he spent the rest of the war.

CE Petty .     British Army

CE Petty served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: The Wartime Memories Project is no longer in contact with Dan , his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Pte. George Petty .     British Army Royal West Kent Regiment   from London

My father, George Petty never spoke much about his time serving with the Royal West Kent Regiment. He has now sadly passed and my children are eager to find out all they can about their Grandad and to keep his memories alive. All I know is he was a Prisoner of War in Camp XXA at Torun Poland. Some stories I remember were of him working on a farm ploughing fields with big horses and being on the death march. I would love to hear from anyone who can give more information about the life in this particular camp.

RL Petty .     British Army Essex Regiment

RL Petty served with the Essex Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Cox'n. Warren G. Petty .     United States Navy   from Indiana

Joseph Ambrose Peutherer .     Royal Navy   from Colenbough, Edinburgh

My grandad Joe, Joseph Peutherer served in the Royal Navy, Chatham Port Division. I have his discharge papers and medals. He volunteered as a boy in 1939 and was conscripted in 1941 and was discharged in 1946 when he then settled in Portsmouth and opened up a bookmakers shop.

Spr. Albert Stanley Peverell .     British Army 166 Railway Construction Coy. Royal Engineers

The only information I have concerning my father, Stan Peverell is that his letters to my mother from Italy and Africa said “Sapper AS Peverell, 1892925, 161 R.C.C. RE., C.M.F

I believe CMF means central mediterreanean force. He was in the Royal Engineers, but what is RCC?

Spr. Ronald Ernest Peverett .     British Army Royal Engineers   from 51 Kingswood Road, Chiswick, London, W4

I was born shortly after my father, Sapper Ronald Peverett, left in January/February 1942 for Palestine. In the letters my mother sent she referred to me as "our darling baby" so it was a long time before he knew I was a girl. It was even longer before he saw me - I was over three years old. The only story he told was that of being awake in bed in a large tent one night when he saw an Arab boy enter and quietly approach each sleeping person and steal things. As he approached my father he pretended to be asleep then, as the boy went to steal from him, he jumped up and grabbed the boy. The boy responded by biting his hand and then running away but he dropped what he was taking from my father.

Tel. Maurice Pewsey .     Royal Navy HMS Scotia

My father Maurice Pewsey's WW2 service record includes an entry for HMS Scotia between 01 Oct 1944 to 06 Nov 1944. I guess this was some sort of shore base, and perhaps he was there for a course. His rank was Telegrapher.

He was still assigned to the ship during its refit in CA in the summer of 1945. Mom took time off from her DOD job to be with Dad in California. Oh, by the way, I was born 9 months later!

SSgt. Howard F "Sonny" Pfister .     US Army 1202nd Service Com Unit   from Newark, N.J.

My father was Howard F. Pfister Jr. He served at the Battle of the Bulge. He was shot in the leg prior to being captured at St. Vith in Belgium on the 21st of December 1944. He was marched over 20 miles to the German border, loaded onto an over crowded box car along with many other POW's. He was taken to the worst of all Stalags 1XB. He remained there until the American liberation in mid April 1945.

Capt. Kenneth August Pfleger DFC. Air Medal.     US Army Air Force 92 Bomb Group 407th Bomb Squadron   from Rochester, NY, USA

My father, Kenneth A. Pfleger, was a bombardier with the 407th Squadron, 92nd Bombardment Group stationed at Bovingdon. He kept one bomb pin from each mission, writing the mission name and type and number of bombs dropped on each label. He won the DFC and the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters. Also the Presidential Citiation for the group.

I have the bomb pins, a silk flag of France and a few other items now.

May Phaby .     Women's Land Army

I served in the Land Army for nine years in Cornwall from 1941 to 1950, when it disbanded. We had a review at Penzance by the Late King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. This was a great occasion in our Land Army lives, an unforgettable time.

I was mostly employed on dairy farms around West Cornwall. I still have my original badge, armlets, certificates and of course a lot of photographs. I would love to meet up with any former Land Girls who knew me to share our memories. My Land Army number was 39311 which I remember as clear as a bell.

I feel that all the Land Army girls helped to feed the nation, some even losing their lives, especially on the east coast. I continued in dairy farming up until the sixties when I married an ex-farmer, John Lawley.

Pte. Joseph Phalen .     Canadian Army Cape Breton Highlanders

Uncle Joe Phalen never ever talked about the war. His only story to me was that he played ball at Arnhem. This was a fun story for him since I had become a paratrooper. News about Joe comes back though, one of his future brothers in law saw the J. Phalen name on his kit and thought crikey!, he's 17. If that kid gets killed I can't go home! I have a photo of Joe in uniform with two of his five sisters also in uniform.

CPO Gnr. George Charles Matthias " " Pharoah DSM..     Royal Navy HMS Warspite   from London

My father Kenneth John Pharoah died recently. He served in the RN in the late forties through the end of the sixties. In his possessions we came across short typed eye witness accounts written by his father, regarding the Battle of Matapan and the Second Battle of Narvik. I am currently re-typing these and will gladly send them to you upon completion.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
