Jack served against the Italians in the Western Desert in 1940, then Rommel and the Afrika Korps. He was then detached to the Australians and sent to Greece, in 1941. The evacuation from Greece saw him twice sunk in Piraeus harbour aboard Navy ships, before escaping on a liner commandeered by the Australian Army in Alexandria. Back to the desert war, and the battle of El Alamein, the capture of Tunis, and the surrender of the Afrika Korps in 1943. Next was the invasion of Sicily, followed by the invasion of Italy, and the slow pushing back of the Germans to Monte Cassino. After taking part in the opening stages of this battle, his unit was transferred back to the UK for a refit prior to D-Day. He saw action on D-Day, in the battles for Normandy, the invasion of Holland, Arnhem, and finally the invasion of Germany, before de-mob in Feb 1946. Not one home leave during his entire service!

Arthur Edward Potterton .     Army Ambulance Driver RASC   from The Stores, Lapworth, Warwickshire

I'm preparing the war diary of Arthur Potterton, an ambulance driver with the RASC, into booklet form for his son and daughter. He was enlisted at Thorpe Barracks Birmingham October 1939, was captured at Steenvorde May 1940 and transferred to various POW camps in Poland near Danzig (Gdanske) also working on various farms nr Marienburg. January 1945 he was on the long walk (800Km) from Marienburg/Willenburgh until they were picked up by 104th Division 1st Army (American) April 26th 1945. I would much appreciate any info you can give me, especially his service number, his family have very little info on their father except the diary notes, a photo of him in uniform taken on enlistment and a group photo taken at Stalag XXb.603 in 1944. The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
