About
Flt.Sgt. Ernest Edward Clifford "Nobby" Poulton . Royal Air Force 189 Squadron from Tooting
My father, Ernest Poulton, was mid upper gunner on Lancaster aircraft CA-T attached to 189 Squadron at Fulbeck in 1944. He flew on 14 missions to France, Germany and Poland. He finished the war in Eqypt, being part of Operation Tiger which was going to attack Japan prior to the A bomb being dropped by the Americans. He told me that his aircraft was the only one in the squadron that was never replaced and it survived the war. The tail gunner was called Victor Parsons another Englishman, the pilot came from Hong Kong and the engineer, who was an Australian, was called Aub. All survived the war uninjured.

William Henry C Pow . British Army Royal Armoured Corps
Pte. William George Pow . British Army Royal Gloucestershire Regiment from Bristol
My mother used to talk about her Uncle Bill, who she had a great love for, and the fact that he was a prisoner of war in Malbork Stalag XXB, PoW number was 11917. She and his son Keith, told me that William escaped several times during his detention. My mother also told me that because of his surname Pow, most of any correspondence was never received by William because they thought they were looking for a William George (POW)and not William Pow. He did end up getting his letters but not until the time of the march. He survived the War and went on to have several children, preferring the outdoors than the indoors.

My uncle Benji Powell was missing for a number of years after being set free. He was found in a hospital somewhere. He was never quite the same. He never married and appeared rather odd. A times he would laugh out of context, but he was very kind.

My father, Brinley Powell (Taff), Royal Marine, was on the Nigeria on the Russian convoys and was on board when she was torpedoed in 1942 and taken off on a tribal class destroyer, the Ashanti. One of his best friends was 'Jock' King who later became a policeman. I grew up with many of these photos.
Flight Seargent Carey "Taffy" Powell . Royal Air Force Rear Gunner 106 Sqd. from Froncysyllte, North Wales
Sgt. David George Powell . British Army 53rd Reconnaissance Regt from Cwmdare, S. Wales
My father spoke very little of his time during the Second World War. But I remember at his funeral several of his "old pals" recalling his capture of some Germans single handed in a cellar. They laughed as they recalled hearing his loud voice shouting at them .... He was a drill sergeant. He went to several reunions in S'Hertershenbosch ... Where the locals looked after them royally.
My father really liked the Dutch people and mentioned how they had helped himself and others whilst under severe stress themselves. We should always remember these wonderfully courageous young men who gave so much of their lives for us. I am so deeply proud of my Father and I thought he deserved a mention, no matter how small. I have photos and will post them as I find them.

David Powell served with the 2nd Devonshire Regiment.
Lt. Edward John Powell . United States Navy USS Boise from Kansas City, USA
My 2nd cousin, Edward John Powell, known as Jack was born in 1911, and emigrated to the USA in 1913 as a small boy, with his parents, Edward and Matilda Powell, and his three older sisters, Vera Gladys, Doris Irene, and Marjorie. All members of the family were born in Monmouthshire, South Wales. Jack's father (an accountant) had received an inheritance in 1912 from his uncle, who was a resident of Kansas City, and that was where the family eventually settled.
During World War 2 Jack served on USS Boise as a Lieutenant, and all my information about him was passed on to me by my late aunt, so the information is rather limited. He was known to serve in the Pacific, and was aboard USS Boise, when it escorted General MacArthur.
After World War 2, Jack settled in California, and was still unmarried in 1948, when his father went to live with him. I have no knowledge about him after 1950. If anyone knows anything more about Jack Powell, I would be most interested to hear, as I may also have living descendants of this side of the Powell family, still in the USA.

I understand that Group Captain Powell was at Feltwell during WW2 although not as a Group captain at the time. He was a pilot and flew Wellingtons amongst other aircraft. Can anyone confirm whether he did?

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
