World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

F/Lt. Louis Charles Schaverien .     Royal Canadian Air Force 196 Squadron   from Shepherds Grove

My father Louis Schaverien was with 196 Squadron. I don't know much about his war as he spoke little of it. I do know he had shrapnel in his knees, and crashed at least once.

Capt. Harry W Schenck .     (d.21st February 1945)

Held as a Prisoner in Fukuoka 3b.

P/O Johannes Arnoldus Ludovicus Schevenhoven .     Royal Air Force No. 320 (Netherlands) Squadron RAF   from Holland

(d.26th August 1940)

Fokker T.VIII.W serial AV963/R-9 320 Sq was lost during convoy patrol over the Irish Sea.

The crew were:

  • P/O J.A.L. Schevenhoven - Missing in Action
  • Sgt. H.G.A. Akkers - Missing in Action
  • L.J. Scholman - Missing in Action

PFC. Alphonse William Schill .     United States Army 106th Infantry Division   from St. Louis City, MO

My great uncle was PFC Alphonse "Al" William Schill, born in Formosa, County Bruce, Ontario, Canada. He served in the 106th Infantry Division and was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. I have the "post cards" that he sent to my great aunt saying that he was imprisoned at Kriegsgefangenen-Durchgangslager POW Transit Camp (dated 28 January 1945) and Stalag XIIA (dated 17 February 1945). My great aunt kept several newspaper clippings about the 106th Division. She also had one that listed her husband (Al) as being Missing In Action, her brother as being Wounded In Action (Edwin A. Wittneber) and her cousin (Fred W. Harrow) as being Killed In Action

PFC. Alvin Lyle "Short" Schilling .     US Army 34th Regiment 9th Division   from Jefferson, IA, USA

My father, Alvin Schilling was captured in October, 1944 near Aachen, Germany. He had been separated from his unit in late September. I have a letter that he wrote during his time in Stalag IIB. He talked about being liberated by the Russian front, and treated badly by the Russians. He was on the march till meeting American forces in April, 1945.

S/Sgt. Sol D. "Butch" Schindler .     United States Army Air Corps 741st Bomb Squadron 455th Bombbardment Group   from Brooklyn, NY

Butch Schindler flew with 741st Bomb Squadron, 455th Bombardment Group.

PFC. Robert Loraine "Lee" Schlegel .     US Army   from Salem, Oregon

Robert L Schlegel_Stalag XIIA Card (front)

My father Robert Schlegel was a POW in Germany, in Stalag XIIA. I have my father's ID card or processing card. Given the very good condition of the card, I would suspect it was issued at the time of repatriation from the POW camp when he was reconnected with US Forces. The Allied Forces and the Russians were both closing in on the area, and the German guards tried to turn themselves over to the US prisoners knowing they would be treated fairly. They were afraid the Russians would get there first and they knew they wouldn't fare well with the Russian troops. In the end they all scattered, hiding from any lingering SS troops that were still in the area, and waited for the Allied troops to arrive. I have a good account of that time from the stories my father wrote down. On the back of the card is the name of someone who I assume was another POW, Joseph A. Wilbur from Jamestown, NY.

Foster Schlesinger .     United States Army 80th Infantry Div.   from PA.

I am looking for information on the 80th Infantry in WWII, mostly on anyone who knew my dad, Foster Schlesinger Jr from PA. or where to find information.

Pfc Raymond H Schletterer .     (d.2nd January 1945)

Held as a Prisoner in Fukuoka 3b.

CPO. Lester John Schmidt .     United States Navy USS New York   from Hatboro, PA

At the age of 17 Lester Schmidt took to the sea via the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres aboard the battleship New York, cruisers Quincy and Miami, as well as the Snatch, Laysan Island and Talladega warships. He rose through the ranks to Chief Petty Officer and earned multiple decorations.

Sgt. A. W. L. Schneider .     RAF 101 Sqd. (d.14th Jan 1944)

Cpl. S. G. Schoeman .     South African Forces Corps of Military Police   from Koedoesfontein

(d.28th May 1945)

Corporal Schoeman was the Son of Gideon J. H, Schoeman and Sara J. Schoeman; husband of S. C. Schoeman, of Koedoesfontein. He was 52 and is buried in the Al Kleiner Farm Burial Ground, Potchefstroom, North West, South Africa

L/Cpl. Charles Arthur Schofield .     British Army Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment   from Lumb, Rossendale, Lancs

Charles Schofield was a POW at Stalag VIIIC, Konin, Zaganski, in Poland. His POW number was 86946. I think he was captured in 1942. He survived and returned home to Lumb, Rossendale, Lancashire where he married and had a son. He suffered from ill health and died in September 1970, at the age of 47. He is buried in St Michael's C of E graveyard in Lumb. Charles was a Church Warden at St Michael's.

Charles was the brother of my first cousin three times removed's husband and his son and I were born in the same month in the same year and went to the same schools together, we were good friends. He seldom talked about his experiences as a POW except that he once had an operation, without anesthetic, undertaken by a German army doctor. He was an active man until his final illness, who enjoyed hunting with dogs on the local moors, he kept a greyhound and a Jack Russell terrier. A fine, generous man, who died before his time.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
