I believe my father drove an ambulance in WW2. I understand that he was based at Mount Pleasant school in Bevois Valley, Southampton. He was blind in one eye a a result of a childhood illness and was rejected for active service as a result. His name was George Sidney Short and he was 17 when war broke out. Any information or especially photographs would be most gratefully received.

Jake Short served on board HMS Amazon where he earned the DSM when the Amazon was escorting convoy QP11. I think HMS Edinburgh was sunk in the same action. Sadly, Jake passed away in 1990.
Joan Short . Nurse
My mother, Mrs Joan Chandler nee Short, was a nurse during the 2nd World War. She was sent, by train from Southern England, with a group of elderly patients to (as she remembers) Bangour Hospital, Midlothian. I am bringing her to Scotland next May to revisit some of the places she visited during the War and I am trying to find this old hospital. Internet searches have proved fruitless, have any of you heard of it. She remembers it as a collection of Nissen Huts near to another place where she used to collect meals. Here she nursed the elderly and some German prisoners of war.

Ken Short .
I am trying to find out more about my late father Ken Short who was, according to his POW war record cards, in Stalag XXa and XXb. The only bit of information I ever had from him about his POW years, was about the long forced march he did with all other prisoners from Poland into Germany in January, February and March 1945. Sadly, he is not in any of the photos on this site.

Percival John Short . British Army
My grand father Percival Short was in WW2 under what I know as Desert Rats I have some photos and mMy Uncle Steven has his medals at present. Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
