L/Cpl. Ralph William John Shotter . Army Royal Army Service Corps (d.17th Jun 1940)
My grandmother was romantically involved with Ralph Shotter, who was in the Royal Army Services Corps and has heard that he was on board the Lancastria when it sunk. He was 21 years old. Apparently he has no known grave, but his name appears on a war memorial in Dunkirk, France, which I would love to take her to see. Also, she would love to hear from anyone who may have known Ralph and to hear of any last memories of him or see any pictures. Please email me if you have any further information. Many thanks.

The SS Ethylene rescued thirteen survivors, six from the Norwegian vessel Marianne, and six from the Avonwood. Jack was one of those rescued. Unfortunately, he subsequently collapsed and died on board the Ethylene. There is a copy of the statement made by Master of the Ethylene, Lawrence Bruce Anderson, giving details of the circumstances. Victor George Shrewsbury . Auxiliary Fire Service Dock Head fire station London from Major Road Bermondsey
My father, Victor Shrewbury, served in the Auxiliary Fire Service, London Fire Brigade and was stationed at Dock Head Fire Station during WW2. He was a turntable B man up on the long extension ladders. He fought fires in the London Docklands throughout the war. Especially hard during the Blitz. He was very proud of his efforts and carried a bad back all his life as he was injured rescuing patients through a skylight window when Guys Hospital was hit.
His brothers, serving in the Army, all said he and another brother who was also in the Auxiliary Fire Service in Deptford, had a more difficult time during the war than they did. I am very very proud of him.
L/Cpl. John Shrigley . British Army Royal Army Medical Corps from 500 Bolton Road, Aspull, Lancashire
My father John Shrigley served in India in WW2. As far as I can recall he enlisted in the summer of 1943. He was in the Royal Army Medical Corps and based in Johore State hospital. At one point he was sent to convalesce in Darjeeling following an operation to replace a fractured skull with a metal plate. I think that they had to evacuate the patients from the Hospital because the Japanese were advancing on them. He was also at some point in Rangoon. He came home in either 1946 or 1947 on the Troopship Empress of Australia, which docked in Liverpool. I would love to obtain details as to his Army Number, Service Record, etc, but am not sure how to go about it.
L/Cpl. John Shrigley . British Army Southeast Asia Command Royal Army Medical Corps from 500 Bolton Road, Aspull, Lancs.
John Shrigley served in Johore Bahru Hospital, possibly in the Operating Theatres. He sailed home on "Empress of Australia", which docked in Liverpool. Due to their being no transport home at that time in the morning, he walked home from Liverpool.
L/Cpl. John Shrigley . British Army Royal Army Medical Corps from Aspull
L/Cpl. John Shrigley . Royal Army Medical Corps from Bolton Road, Aspull
My father, John Shrigley, lived in Aspull, where he became an ambulance driver for the A.R.P. He enlisted on 2nd of February 1943 from address of 500 Bolton Road, Aspull, Nr. Wigan. He served in the R.A.M.C. stationed in Johor Bahru General Hospital.
At one point he was sent to convalesce following an operation to replace a fracture with a metal plate on the left side of his head. He received the injury whilst playing football when he was hit in the head. I remember the telegram arriving, and the postman stayed on the doorstep whilst my mother read the details. I think that they had to evacuate the patients from the hospital because the Japanese were advancing on them over the hill.
He was also at some point in Rangoon. He was a friend of Wong Arthur who wrote a letter to “All the Shrigley children” which we received when we were young and dad was away in India. He came home in either 1946 or 1947 on the Troopship Empress of Australia, which docked in Liverpool.

In 1946 he had inoculations appear to be indicative of possible year of fracture to skull, which occurred following a kick to head whilst diving to get a loose ball during a Rugby game whilst based in Johore. Metal Plate fitted to left side of head, then sent to Darjeeling for convalescence.

Lillian Jessie Shrivell . Women's Land Army from Brighton
My Mum, Lil Shrivell and her sister, Violet Shrivell, were billeted at Poynings, Sussex. My Mum at Millie Grover's. They both worked at Saddlescombe Farm nr.Poynings, My Mum on the the thrashing machine, my Auntie milking the cows. They cycled the steep hill to the farm daily and also were requested to help on 2 other farms. She often talked about Major Penny but I have no information about which farm he owned or worked on. One of her best friends was Nora Hollingdale who married Stan and became a Hillier. Mum had been engaged to Charlie Hollingdale (apparently no relation to Nora) for 3 years he being the shepherd at Saddlescombe but when Saddlescombe became a dairy farm Charlie and his sheep were sent to Eastbourne where he met and married Betty who is now in her 90's. Charlie has passed away. Mum also knew Stan and Grace Hollingdale the brother and sister of Charlie. Mum met my Dad, George Haines when he came home on leave in 1944 and they had many very happy years together but sadly have both now passed away. Is there anyone out who remembers my Mum or Auntie?

Pte. Gordon James "Shuff" Shufflebotham . British Army 551st Army Troops Coy. Royal Engineers from 4 Crescent, Macclesfield
My dad, Gordon James Shufflebotham, was an electrician for the Electricity Board in Macclesfield. He lived at Churchside, Macclesfield then with my mum, Winifred Mary Gibson, her maiden name. Then lived at 4 The Crescent, Huddersfield Rd., Macclesfield. I understand he was a Sapper. I know he was in Tobruk in 1941. I found a letter headed Company Orders by Major F.E.T. Hart, Officer Commanding 551 Army Troops Coy. RE. Letter dated 22nd Dec 1941. Regarding another letter, from Adv. H.Q. Eighth Army MEF, dated 19th Dec., saying now RE company about to leave Tobruk fortress. "I would like to thank all under your command for maintaining essential services under dangerous conditions and for your bomb disposal with improvised equipment dealing with over 700 bombs", and so it continued, then signed N.M. Ritchie, Lieut. General G.O.C in C. Eighth Army.
He left mum and us 2 kids when I was 9, I am 72 now and only saw him twice in 50 years. I give him the benefit of the doubt and think the war changed him completely, anyway while I am still alive I thought he deserved a mention for his war effort.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
