About
James Robert George Spall . British Army 28th Searchlight Regiment Royal Artillery from Suffolk
Pte. Philip Spall . British Army Leicestershire Regiment
When searching through my Mothers effects following her death, my sister found the enclosed photos of Private Philip Spall to whom we believe she was engaged in 1939. It appears he was captured, possibly at Dunkirk, and was POW. I have attached a portrait dated 1939, a POW group photo dated 1942 and a further group of 4 undated. My mother did not marry Philip so I do not know what became of him. Any information will be of great interest.

SPC. Albert Henry Sparey . British Police Somerset Constabulary from Ston Easton, Somerset.
I found this Special Constabulary Warrant Card at my auntie's, it says that Albert Henry Sparey (my great grandfather) was to act as Special Constable in the Parish of Ston Easton, Somerset. It was written on 13th September, how could I find out which year? Or how I could find any other information on him related to his role and duties?

Sgt. George Henry "Ned" Sparkes . Royal New Zealand Air Force 487 squadron from Kennington, London
(d.3rd May 1943)
George Sparkes was my great uncle, my Nan's brother. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves and was attached to 487 Squadron, a New Zealand squadron. On 3rd May, 1943, a raid was undertaken on a power station in Holland. Unfortunately the Enemy was alerted to the raid before they got near their target and nearly all the planes were shot down. There were 12 planes involved in the raid, one had to turn back before reaching Holland because of mechanical failure. Of the remaining 11 planes only one managed to get back home. George was the rear gunner, and he and the pilot were killed, the navigator and wireless operator survived and were taken prisoner. George had only been married for 6 months, to Olive. She remained close to her in-laws and was my godmother.
Stkr/2nd Cl. Peter Edward Sparkes . Royal Navy HMS Golden Hind from Surrey
After many colourful stories about my dad, Peter Sparkes's time in the war, he passed away in February 2017.
One of the stories that stands out is the one that his family are most familiar with and that is the one on how he lost the top of his finger. Unfortunately for us, everyone got told a different version. Myself and my brother were told it got chopped off in a heavy door on board a ship, the little great grandchildren were wide eyed in awe when he told them a sniper shot it off. We will never know the real reason, but his great grandchildren loved his stories. Who knows if that happened during his time on HMS Golden Hind from September 1945 to May 1946?

Sgt Eric Cyril Sparks . British Army 87 Field Regt. Royal Artillery from Colchester
My dad, Eric Sparks, worked as a tailor at John Colliers in Colchester before the war. He was also the goalkeeper for Colchester United in their Southern League days. He was called up 0n 15.1.40 at Shoeburyness in Essex and joined the Royal Artillery.
After training he went to the Middle East area and spent all his service there including Iraq, Persia(Iran),Syria and Italy. He was on 25 pounder field guns and eventually rose to be a sergeant. While on leave in Cairo, he fell off the back of a lorry and broke his back, but after rehab, rejoined the unit. He became a trainer on artillery weapons in Iraq.
Sometime in 1944, in Italy the gun was firing when a shell exploded in the breech killing two men and wounding the rest. Eric hand his left hand severely blown apart and was sent back after initial treatment to the UK for his finger to be repaired, but it didn't happen and his finger was taken off. Obviously he was discharged medically in 1945.
He married his sweetheart, Sgt Major Violet Cook of the ATS at Colchester Military Hospital in 1945. He couldn't return to his old profession so became a clerk at Colchester Barracks and eventually became the Superintendent Clerk of Works for all Military buildings and areas in Essex. Despite his disability, he played the piano and organ in Church up to his death.
Unfortunately, the war got him in the end, when all the millions of minute blood clots that he had lived with in his body since the war, joined up as one huge clot and killed him in 1986.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
