F/O. David Alistair "Dicky" Sparrow .     Royal Air Force 151 Squadron   from Gravesend

(d.20th April 1943)

David Sparrow met my mother just before the War and after he gained his wings they became engaged. He was posted to 151 Squadron in 1941, flying Defiants and later Mosquito NF11. His gunner and later Radar Operator was F/O Victor Brown. Late in 1942 David was sent to De Havilland to be the test pilot for the High Altitude Mosquito. Upon returning to the Squadron in 1943 he became involved with the early Night Ranger missions into enemy territory and sadly was shot down and killed along with Victor Brown on April 20th 1943. The aircraft Mosquito DZ755 crashed close to Smeerling in the Netherlands where the two crew are buried and remembered by the local community every year.

F/O. David Alistair Sparrow .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 151 Squadron   from Gravesend, Kent

(d.20th April 1943)

J Sparrow .     Royal Air Force   from Elmswell Road Wetherden Nr Stowmarket Suffolk.

I have in my possession a YMCA prisoners book "A Wartime Log" in the name of John Sparrow, the book gave his address as Elmswell Road Wetherden Nr Stowmarket Suffolk. There are about 82 pages in the book, most of them are poems, drawings and letters, one page refers to Sunday 14 Jan 1945 in Stalag 357 refering to reprisals due to German POW's in Camp 306 in Egypt.

Could he be the JJ Sparrow listed above as a POW in camp 357? Any information on this prisoner as to his rank, occupation and how he became a prisoner would be greatly appreciated.

Sgt. Bruce Harry Sparrow. .     R.C.A.F. (d.10th Oct 1942)

Robert E. Spaulding .     United States Navy USS Boise

My father served on the Boise from 1941-1945. I would appreciate any stories/pics about him from his shipmates. He passed away in 1988 and didn't pass along a lot about his naval service. Too painful for him.

SQMS Albert Edward "Spav" Spavins .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps   from West Lulworth

My father, SQMS Spavins, was a Lancastria survivor. He told me that as he was one of the last people aboard ship he had to go to the boat deck because there was no room below. As the ship began to sink he tried to persuade one of his friends to jump with him. However, his friend could not swim. Dad jumped and as he looked up his friend lit a cigarette and waved him goodbye. He does not remember how long he spent in the water but eventually a mine sweeper, very overloaded, passed by and someone threw him a lifebelt and along with many others was towed home to England. He was wearing only a shirt when he got home. When he finally got a new uniform and equipment he came home on leave. He was in a bad way and told me that the Stuka dive bombers had somewhat un-nerved him.

Dad recovered and some years later volunteered once again with RASC/EFI to go to Korea. It so happened that I was with The Somaliland Scouts at the time and when Dad returned from Korea I flew over to Aden and met the ship where I met my father and some of his friends.

LAC Harold Spear .     Royal Air Force 223 Squadron   from Didsbury, Manchester

My Father, Harold Spear joined 223 Squadron when they were moved to North Africa in 1941, he remained with the Squadron in the 8th Army moving up through Sicily, Italy and then Germany. He was an ardent developer of photos and I have a lot of the planes, people, towns etc. during this period. The stresses of the war I am sure led to his early death from heart failure at the age of 56 as the stories of what our men went through are hard to describe. He was a man who did not want to talk much about the 5 years he was away but was proud to have been involved in the crushing of the German Army, and I am proud to have known him. RIP Dad x

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
