Pte. Samuel Maurice "Mic" Spicer . British Army 7th Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from Bath
(d.12th January 1945)
Samuel Spicer was my grandfather. He was proud to serve his country and defend his honour. He left behind a very young wife (my grandmother) and my father who was just 3 years old when he lost his dad.
Samuel (Mic) loved life, fun and ginger biscuits and I follow him in looks and personality. I am the last in his line of Spicers and so, even though married, I kept his name to honour his memory.

My father, Matthew Spiegelhalter served at RAF Eshott during WW2, and he, my mother, and I lived at Longhorsley. Although very young at the time, I do remember visiting the airfield for a Christmas Show. My father ran the Spiegy Club, which put on the shows, etc., I believe, and I remember entertaining lots of people coming to our house. After the war, he kept in touch with other members of the Club, Jane Wheeler and Dorothy Leece were two of these. He was a Leading Aircraftman when Mentioned in Dispatches, and may have worked with radar. He died in 1951.

He was held as a POW in Stalag 20b. While working with horses and helping out as a "Blacksmith" of which he had no experience at all, he got kicked and a dislodged a kneecap. Nursing Sister. Mary Kathleen Spiers . Queen Alexandras Royal Naval Nursing Service HMS Glendower from Cricklewood
Mary Spiers was a SRN at Middlesex Hospital and began her training in late Summer 1940. Her training included time with the war blinded at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In May 1944 she was sent with other nurses to establish a Casualty Clearing Station in Portsmouth. The Clearing Station became operational on D-Day. She recalled that British casualties had hand-written histories; the American had typed notes - written by clerks initially in shell holes on Omaha beach! Later she was seconded to the Navy, and eventually became permanent rather than wartime with QARNNS. She was briefly at HMS Glendower training establishment, where the VE day gun salute was achieved by tossing thunderflashes into metal dustbins at the correct intervals. She believes the gunnery officer that day was Lt RN Prince Philip. She was in the Naval Hospital in Malta in 1946 or 47 and was discharged from QARNNS upon her marriage to Surgeon Lt (Dentist) John Miller in May 1948.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
