WO William Walton Spirit .     Royal Air Force 76 Squadron   from Prudhoe, Northumberland




John J. Spitalieri .     United States Army 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment   from Atco, PA

John J. Spitalieri was a US Army veteran of World War II, honorably discharged from the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division of the US Army. He served in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campagins in Germany, France and Austria.




Pte. Frederick George "Ted" Spittel .     British Army 4th Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment   from Kingston upon Hull

Our father, Frederick Spittel, was called up in April 1939 aged 21 and was in the BEF in France. He was evacuated from Dunkirk. He was captured in North Africa at Bir Hachiem in June 1942 and held in various Italian POW camps. He was one of many who lived rough in Northern Italy for several months before he was recaptured and taken to Stalag V11A. He didn't speak much about his experiences but he was an apprentice bricklayer before the war and was engaged on building work in Munich. Our dad died in 1969 aged 50.

I was in the Womans Land Army for 3 1/2 years during WW2 in the Timber Corps.




Ldg Stoker Charles Ernest Spooner .     Royal Navy HMS Manchester

My father-in-law, Charles Spooner was a stoker first class on The Manchester at the time that she was sunk. He was then held in a POW camp by the Vichy French and after his release with the other prisoners he was returned to England where he was hospitalised in either Hastings or Wales. This was around 1942/3 As my Husbands parents separated he has very little knowledge about what his Father went through during this time and as I am doing a web page I would appreciate any information that anyone can give me such as how many men were on the HMS MANCHESTER, how many survived and how many days were the survivers in the water before being rescued and does anyone have any idea what the name of the POW camp would be and what kind of conditions would be there I understand that it was in North Africa.

Pte. Donald Leonard Spragg .     British Army 16th (Perthshire) Btn. Black Watch   from Camberwell, London

Donald Spragg was born in 1924 in London to Mary Ann Margaret Thoroughgood, age 21, and Leonard William Spragg, age 22. He died in Chelmsford, Essex in 1999. He had two sisters, Joan Mary was born in 1926 in Essex and Daphne Marjory was born in 1928 in London, she is still living in Australia with her family.

Cpl. Cynthia Spraggett .     British Army Auxiliary Territorial Service

Dulcie Pearce served as an ambulance driver in the ATS, starting her service at Wickham House, Clevedon, Somerset in I believe 1941. At Wickham was a Dr Thomas Johnson. I have an autograph book of hers with many, many names of women and men serving in the ATS. Dulcie spent a great deal of time at Crossways, Haywards Heath, but was also sent to Honiton, Castle Cary, Chester, Ormskirk and Marston Camp.

Able Seaman Thomas Plimmer Spratt .     Royal Navy HMS Acheron (d.17 Dec 1940)

This is my Uncle Tom who went down on the Acheron in 1940. he was 21 years old. I think it is now too late to contact anyone who might have served with him. He was also on the HMS Hood for a while.

PFC. Carlyle Willis Spreeman .     US Army 112th Infantry   from Suring, WI USA

Carlyle W Spreeman served with the 112th, 22P infantry in WWII. He was part of the courier service and went from foxhole to foxhole with orders from the officers to advance, retreat, whatever was needed. He was captured around November 3 just prior to the Battle of the Bulge, on a road in the Hurtigen Forest in Belgium. Although assigned to Stalag 12, mostly he and other POWs were crammed in boxcars and taken to work in the farm fields and at feed mills, carrying sacks of grain.

The POWs were liberated by the Russians near the Black Sea and told to find their way to the coast and live off the land. Dad would tell our family the good stories but mourned the loss of the men he knew and served with in the war in silence.

P/O Joseph Dennis J1988 was a pilot based at Middleton St George now Teeside airport and flew Halifax's from this base for 419 RCAF Moose Squadron which included VR;


CPO. Bruce Sydney George Spriddle .     Royal Navy HMS Dorsetshire   from Plymouth




Leslie J. Sprigg .     Royal Navy HMS Greenwich




Sgt. Anthony "Spriggy" Spriggs .     Royal Air Force flight eng. 15 Sqd   from Bristol

(d.18th May 1942)

Tony Briggs died when his Stirling crashed on the 18th of May 1942. He was 22 years old.

The crew were:

  • Sgt D.J.Jeffs, the only survivor was taken PoW and held in Stalag 8b.

AbleSea. Albert John Springall .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson   from Poplar, Westham

My father, Bert Springall, enlisted as a boy seaman at the onset of WW2 and after completing his training began his service on HMS Nelson. He transferred to a T class submarine as a torpedoman on which he served until being transferred to beach commando training for DDay landing on Juno Beach.

He then transferred to HMS Barfluer and after a good will tour of Australian ports joined the British Pacific Fleet. He was in Tokyo Bay at the Japanese surrender.

After being demobilized he settled in Australia.




C/Sgt Albert Leonard Percival Springall .     British Army Pioneer Corps

I understand my father Albert Springall, known as Percy, joined up before the start of the war in the London section and was promoted and demoted before becoming Colour Sargeant. He served in the Pioneer Corps. He told me he built Bailey Bridges and was often in front of the line. I know at some stage he suffered burns to his face and was treated by American Doctors and he was thankful about that rather than being treated by his own army.
