Sgt. Ralph Tracey .     British Army Pioneer Corps   from Ditchling, Sussex

I didn't know my grandfather Ralph Tracey as after the war he became estranged from my grandmother and sadly my mother and her siblings ended up in foster care. We found out that after losing his hand in the raid in Rennes and once recovered, he found it difficult to gain employment and to process the after effects of the war and sadly turned to drink. I found out about him through researching my family tree and older family members having the newspaper cutting. The newspaper story is amazing and showed me how very brave our Armed Forces were.

Pvt. Theodore Tracey .     United States Army   from Binghamton, New York

Theodore Tracey was captured by German soldiers somewhere in Germany. He had lost contact with his unit. Happening upon a farm house and hearing muffled voices from within Theodore approached the house. He then heard some laughing coming from inside. Thinking he had found friendlies he knocked on the door of the house. A German soldier opened the door saw the American uniform standing there. The German then said in very good English, "come on in the war is over for you". Ted was sent to Stalag-IV and nearly starved to death in the following months and years. He survived the war and repatriated home to Binghamton New York

Pte. Thomas Tracey .     British Army Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

My father, Thomas Tracey, was in the Argylls, captured at Dunkirk and imprisoned at Stalag XX (A) 3.. He never talked very much about his time there and I have been fascinated to learn what things were link thanks to your project. I have a Daily Record from April 14th 1945, with his picture as also Private Spratt of the Argylls and Private Michael McCourt of the Seaforths. The paper also tells the story of his return home with Privates Michael McCourt of Govan, Joseph Young of Durham, George O'Neil of Ramsgate and Fred Johnston of Stepney. They had escaped from the German prison camp at Hildeheim near Hanover, which they reached after a terrible march from East Prussia and Silesia - over 700 miles in ten weeks. I would be interested to hear from anyone with any further details.

Pte. Abbe Trackenberg .     British Army 10th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment   from London

My father, Abbe Trackenberg, never mentioned the war, like many others, so we never asked. However, it would be fitting for him to be mentioned here.

Sergeant Arthur Herbert "Bob" Tracy GC..     British Army Royal SIgnals

    (d.2nd Mar 1944)

My Uncle Doug Trant was a Signalman with the Royal Corps of Signals. He was a Prisoner of War, working on the Burma Railway. The family story is that he burned the soles of his feet on hot bamboo, and was in such poor condition due to the awful treatment by the Japanese that he died. He died in 1944 aged 22, and he is buried in Chungkai War Cemetery in Thailand. I would love to know how he ended up in Thailand, I suspect he may have been captured at the fall of Singapore, but I don't know for sure. Any information would be appreciated.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
