John Treby was the son of John Frederick Treby and Ingeborg Berg. They lived at Homescroft, Hemps Green Fordham.

John was killed on a night cross country exercise on board Halifax LL414 aircraft, which was from the 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit. The squadron was based at RAF Sandtoft, in Lincolnshire. The plane failed to return and it is thought to have crashed in the early hours of 1st of June 1944 because of bad weather and engine failure. The plane went down in the Glen Isla area in Scotland. Onboard the aircraft were eight airmen including John, one other RAF serviceman and six Canadian airmen. There were no survivors.

Most of the crew are buried at Montrose Sleepyhillock Cemetery in Angus Scotland.

Sig. Walter George Treen .     Royal Navy HMS Malvernian   from London

My father Walter Treen was on board HMS Malvernian in August 1941 when it was sunk in the Atlantic. After two weeks adrift in a lifeboat he was rescued by a German ship and taken prisoner. After some months in Marlag und Milag Nord camp near Bremen, he was moved to Poland. He was put in Bau und Arbeits Batallion 21 based at Blechammer. At the end of 1944 he was moved with other prisoners on a death march, ending up in Bavaria, where the Americans eventually liberated him.

Elmer Treese .     US Army

My Grandma, Doris Axford ran a boarding house on Wyndham Street in Yoevil Somerset which was frequented by a lot of American service personnel. They all called her "Ma" and used to treat her very special often bringing her food supplies and treats from their base. They would marvel at the tasty meals she was able to make out of those supplies. Many kept in touch as did their families often sending parcels to my Mum and her sisters Ruth and Miriam. I wish I had kept records of those names. One I do remember was Elmer Treese or Treece. I wonder if there are any relations of these service men that remember their loved ones speaking of the Axford family from Yeovil? Also has anyone heard of Waldron Axford from the same family and his wife Kay? Any info would be so appreciated. My dear Mum, Dorcas Axford was in both the land army and the ATS. She told me many stories when I was a child about those times and I wish I has taken notes so I could pass them on to my son. He absolutely adored her and was heartbroken when she died.

Pte. Donald Thomas Tregidgo .     ARP Warden   from London

My father, Donald Tregidgo served from the August 1914 Mons campaign through to the Russian Archangel Force in 1919. During that time he said he only slept in a proper bed whilst hospitalised with wounds.

He served as an ARP warden throughout WW2 and was very upset when I went off to serve in Korea.

Flight Seargeant J M Tregoning .     RAF 578 Squadron

Handley Page Halifax III, NA568 LK-Q, took off 11th September 1944 16.04 hrs, Op: Gelsenkirchen. The aircraft was hit by flak and crashed 18.30 hrs. in Kirchhellen. Pte. Gerald Arthur George Treharne .     British Army 1st Btn. Northamptonshire Regiment   from Newnham Way, Kenton

    (d.20th Jan 1945)

My uncle Gerald Treharne died of wounds in Burma on 20th January, 1945 which was 36 days after his 20th birthday. I was told by my mother that he was a fun loving man but also a very considerate man. I was able to obtain his service records and it would seem that he decided to go AWOL on 14th December 1944 (the day before his 20th birthday) for several days and was subsequently charged for this misdemeanour by docking his pay. I do wonder where he could have gone AWOL in the jungle of Burma but that is something I will never find out!

    F/O Howard Cedric Treherne. .     RAF 12Sqd. (d.12th Jun 1943)

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
